Abstract     Many research findings prove that active lifestyle and physical exercise are important factors in health protection. Physical activity prevents from developing the majority of chronic non-contagious diseases such as atherosclerosis, hypertension, stroke, insulin independent diabetes, osteoporosis etc. Epidemiological data show that physical inactivity presents at least twice as risk factors for the development of coronary diseases, similarlyas other main known risk factors for atherosclerosis (high cholesterol level, smoking and hypertension). Physical activity brings into action direct mechanisms (affecting the cardiovascular system) and indirect mechanisms (affecting the known risk factors) and thus decreases the morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular diseases. An important improvement of our health, as well as a longer life expectancy, result from all forms of movement and physical exercise performed over a longer period of time. Therefore, we advise healthy people, as well as sick ones, such kind of exercise that they prefer the most, that can be included easily into their daily routine and that suits their physical fitness, age and health condition. It has been proven that regular physical activity protects health of all age groups. However, particular attention must be devoted to the beginning of the adult age, when most people give up physical activity and begin living a sedentary lifestyle.
Summary     Številne raziskave so pokazale, da sta aktivni življenjski slog in gibanje pomembna varovalna dejavnika zdravja. Telesna dejavnost ščiti pred večino kroničnih nenalezljivih bolezni - aterosklerozo, zvišanim krvnim tlakom, možgansko kapjo, od insulina neodvisno sladkorno boleznijo, osteoporozo... Epidemiološki podatki kažejo, da pomeni telesna neaktivnost najmanj dvakrat večjo ogroženost za nastanek in napredovanje koronarne bolezni, podobno kot drugi poglavitni znani dejavniki tveganja za aterosklerozo (zvišan holesterol, kajenje in hipertenzija). Telesna vadba zmanjšuje obolevnost in umrljivost zaradi srčno-žilnih bolezni tako preko neposrednih (delovanje na srčno-žilni sistem) kot posrednih mehanizmov (delovanje na znane dejavnike tveganja). K pomembnemu izboljšanju našega zdravja in daljšemu življenju prispevajo vse oblike gibanja, ki jih vzdržujemo daljše obdobje. Še zdravim Ijudem, pa tudi bolnikom, zato svetujemo tiste zvrsti gibanja, ki so jim najljubše, ki jih najlažje vključijo v svoj vsakdan in ki ustrezajo njihovim telesnim zmogljivostim, starosti in zdravstvenemu stanju. Izkazalo se je, da redna telesna dejavnost varuje zdravje Ijudi v vseh starostnih skupinah. Še posebej pa moramo biti pozorni ob koncu odraščanja, saj prav v tem času največ Ijudi preneha s telesno dejavnostjo in zavzame sedeči življenjski slog.
