Abstract     Active lifestyle and motion are important health protective factors, and nowadays more and more frequently used also as a therapeutic measures in various disease states. Physical activity protects against most of the chronic noncommunicable disorders, atherosclerosis (especially on coronary arteries), hypertension, stroke, non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis and colorectal carcinoma. Epidemiologic data clearly show that physical inactivity represents at least 2-times greater relative risk for development and complications of coronary artery disease, similar to other most important and well known independent risk factors for atherosclerosis (high cholesterol, smoking and hypertension). Regular physical activity reduces morbidity and mortality due to cardiovascular diseases both through direct (influence on cardiovascular system) and indirect mechanisms (modification of presence and intensity of action of known risk factors). Continuous, life-long motion and physical activity of all kinds help in improvement of our health and prolongation of human lifespan.
Summary     Aktivni življenjski slog in gibanje sta pomembna varovalna dejavnika zdravja, vse pogosteje pa ju uporabljamo tudi pri zdravIjenju bolezni. Telesna dejavnost ščiti pred večino kroničnih nenalezljivih bolezni, aterosklerozo (še posebej na koronarnih arterijah), hipertenzijo, možgansko kapjo, od insulina neodvisno sladkorno boleznijo, osteoporozo in rakom širokega črevesa. Epidemiološki podatki kažejo, da pomeni telesna nedejavnost najmanj dvakrat večjo ogroženost za nastanek in napredovanje koronarne bolezni, podobno kot drugi poglavitni neodvisni dejavniki tveganja za aterosklerozo (zvišan holesterol, kajenje in hipertenzija). Telesna vadba zmanjšuje obolevnost in umrljivost zaradi srčno-žilnih bolezni tako prek neposrednih (delovanje na srčno-žilni sistem) kot posrednih mehanizmov (modifikacija prisotnosti in intenzivnosti delovanja znanih dejavnikov tveganja). K izboljšanju našega zdravja in daljšemu življenju prispevajo vse oblike gibanja in telesne vadbe, ki jih vzdržujemo daljše obdobje.
