Abstract     Epidemiological data show that coronary heart disease (CHD) mortality is continuously declining in Slovenia, in paralel with the trend of this decline in the European Union. Trends in risk factors are not consistent with a slowing of the decline in mortality. In order to reduce CVD mortality and morbidity we should first of all focus on risk factors such as unhealthy lifestyle: unhealthy diet, smoking, stress, physical inactivity, etc. Slovene people have unhealthy diet habits: they eat too many calories, they are overweight, they eat too much fat (40% over norm), too many unsaturated FFA (40%), too much animal fat, too much salt and alcohol. They don't consume enough fruit, vegetables and carbohydrates (potatoes, bread and especially fibers). The are not physically active enough. Slovenes have high risk factor prevalence: 20% have high blood pressure (>160/95 mm Hg), 50% have elevated blood glucose, 50% are overweight. There are several activities going on either continuously or by single performance basis in the society and some important results were achieved (the main is the reduction in smoking prevalence among Slovene adults by 30% in last 7 years). There is considerable activity in population-wide preveniion, primary prevention For people at high risk, and secondary prevention, but wide disparities exist especially among different regions in Slovenia, pointing to major gap in efforts to use available, proven approaches to control CVD. CVD, with predominant CHD are still responsible for nearly 40% of deaths, they are the major cause of death of people over 65, and one of the major causes of death between 45 and 65. There is a high prevalence of risk Factors and it was estimated out of the hard data that there are about 160,000 people in Slovenia at the global CHD risk higher than 20% during the next 10 years.
