Abstract     Injury of spinal cord brings about the widest range of inabilities the person can experience in life. It interferes with numerous levels of every day life. Since the damage is of permanent nature, the individual is constantly faced with coping and adjustment . The effects of stress differ from one individual to the other. The concept of coping appeared in the sixties in ego - psychology and phenomenal cognitive psychology In both directions the coping processes represent the superior category, which on the one hand includes defence meohanisms, comprehended as behaviour styles, but on the other also realistic manners of dealing with critical situation. The authors mention different number of stages in the coping process. However they do not define tham in terms of their duration. They are unanimous that in the initial period following injury, important role is played by defence mechanisms and emotional reactions. Emotional balancing is more appropriate in unchangeable situations. Coping strategies during rehabilitation are not connected to prolonged adjustment. The individual's command of the new situation and coping strategies he or she will utilise, depend on nume rous factors. Coping with the injury of spinal cord is least affected by the factors, which are connected to demographic variables and physical consequences of the injury.
