Abstract     Diabetic neuropathy is an important chronical complication of diabetes. Its presence and seriousness ussualy correlates with duration of diabetes, but in some patients it can be present at the diagnosis of diabetes. Neuropathy can be indicated in many ways, but most commonly as a symmetrical polyneuropathy less often as focal or multifocal neuropathy At the Institute for Rehabilitation, Republic of Slovenia we assesss impairment of peripheral nerve system by determing thermal specific and thermal pain sensitivity. We use the Marstock method, which enables quantitative and qualitative assessment of the cool and warm thresholds and the cold pain and heat pain thresholds. These thresholds are assessed on thenar thigh, leg and foot. Preliminary results showed significantly raised cold pain thresholds on thenar thigh and leg in patients with clinicaly overt diabetic neuropathy compared to healthy subjects. Warm thresholds on foot were also raised in these patients.
