Abstract     Interferential currents have been used in physiotherapy for 50 years. Classical theory which supports the use of interferential currents in pain treatment postulates that they can substitute low frequency electrostimulation, which is unpleasant but effective. Besides that the possibility of amplitude modulation offers the prevention of nerve accommodation. Despite the widespread use the literature about interferential currents is sparse and anecdotal. There is little objective evidence to support claims of analgesic effects of interferential currents. There is also a lack of experimental evidence on the optional stimulating parameters for analgesia induced by the means of interferential current. This has led to treatment preferences, which are based on trial and error, anecdotal literature and therapists' previous experiences with the modality The purpose of the article is to find how many studies were conducted from 1985 till 2000 on the basis of the literature review.
