Abstract     By goiter we have in mind any enlargement of the thyroid gland disregarding the cause. In a limited sense goiter means an evenly or nodosely modified gland which functions normally. The most common and most important reason for goiter is the lack of iodine in nutrition. Probably more than 10% of the world population has an enlarged thyroid gland. Slovenia lies in the region where there is a lack of iodine, which is the reason why we have to add it to our food. We do it by iodizing the table salt.
