Abstract | The aim of the investigation was to analyze the success of assisted reproduction techniques in women after the age of 40. Methods. We analyzed 320 in vitro fertilization (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) cycles. Results. The percentage of oocytes developing to an embryo suitable for embryotransfer did not change essentially between the ages of 40 and 44 (78.9% to 73.3%). At the age of 45, only 40.0% of oocytes developed to an embryo suitable for transfer. The percentages of pregnancies decreased from 14.8% at the age of 40 to 10.0% at the age of 43. At the age of 45, none of the embryos implanted. Abortion rate in the whole group was 38.4%. The take home baby rate, 7.8% at the age of 40, decreased to 4.4% at the age of 44. Only one set of twins (4.2%) was delivered. Conclusion. Only limited success can be expected from techniques of assisted reproduction after age of 40. After the age of 44, however, the procedure becomes clinically unsuccessful. | |
