Abstract     Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic aggressive autoimmune deficiency requiring treatment with medications affecting the autoimmune system in order to stop the progress of the disease, prevent cartilage and joint injuries, and indirectly also deformations and disabilities. The article lists new developments in rheumatoid arthritis treatment and the types of medications with the stress on new drugs. The effects, forms and possible side effects of medications are presented. Some guidelines concerning the management of treatment with immunomodulators are given and cooperation between rheumatologists and family physicians is outlined.
