Abstract		This talk addresses a personal journey from being a clinical nurse to becoming a nurse researcher, a journey very much intertwined with the development of nursing research in the Scandinavian countries. It illustrates the absence of nursing research and nurses with university degrees in the early 1980 to a flourishing academic nursing profession in 2000. The talk also shows how the nursing profession has broadened its focus and understanding of relevant research issues to include knowledge from the narrative paradigm (qualitative research) and not only relying on the logical-scientific paradigm (quantitative research) to advance our understanding of nursing care.
