Abstract     On the average each Slovene eats too much of saturated and total fat and too little fruits and vegetables respectively too much of energy dense food. We suppose that about 50% of Slovene people have increased body weight or they are already fat. Poverty could be associated with an increased risk of obesity. Vegetables and fruit provide relatively little energy, and so families with lower income can afford to buy cheaper calories from high-fat products such as sausage-meat, pies and fats, or sugars and preservers in order to fulfil their energy needs as their first priority. These meals are energy dense, but generally not dense in micro-nutrients compared with vegetable and fruits which, in contrast, are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. However, every ninth family in Slovenia live on the edge of poverty.
