Abstract     Amputation has been carried out as a therapeutic procedure over the centuries. When one suffers from such a disabling procedure, it changes his or her life. It is the responsibility of all who are caring for that person to get him back in the society as soon as possible. Therefore social integration of such a patient is an integral part of total care of an amputee. Amputation surgeryis one of the components of total management. It is the responsibility of the surgeon to produce such an organ of locomotion so that the patient can be fitted with a suitable prosthesis and rehabilitation is speedy. This presentation will cover general principles of amputation surgery including incidence, causal condition, assessment of level selection and important points of surgical procedure. Le.
