Abstract     Early medical rehabilitation (EMR) after lower-limb amputation. Nowadays, lower limb amputation is not a surrender of medicine due to an injury or disease any more. Surgeons who deal with amputation surgery must accept the philosophy that amputation is not an ablation of something useless but creation of something new that will ensure adequate function. A surgeon's duty is to create a stump which is suitable for prosthetic fitting and capable of proper leading of the prosthesis. Therefore, the shape of a stump, its length, mobility, blood supply, skin condition, scars and soft tissues are the most important aspects in prosthetic surgery. Owing to anaesthesia and the anti-and asepsis, quickness is no longer necessary and the amputation surgeon can give his or her full attention to the mostappropriate amputation technique. The loss of a lower limb results in profound physical and psychological consequences for the patient. Among the most frequent consequences are depression, loss of gait pattern and progressive flexion contracture of the stump. Appropriate early medical rehabilitation with immediate post-amputation prosthetic fitting, followed by gait training, successfully prevents threatening complications and it ensures successful definitive prosthetic fitting and complex rehabilitation. In EMR of lower-limb amputees we deal mostly with elderly patients with multifactorial risks, therefore the EMR must start immediately: ž in the afternoon of the operative day, the patient gets respiratory therapy and thrombo-prophylaxis (RT&TP), a proper position of the stump is considered; (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters).
