Abstract     Measurement of outcome in prosthetics and technology can be done from the viewpoint of impairment, activity (disability) and participation (handicap) or more from the viewpoint of technology, user satisfaction and quality of life. Measures of impairment, such as range ofmotion and muscle strength, are more important for the decision on the type of the prosthesis and its components than forthe measurement of outcome. At the activity (disability) level after lower limb amputation, some have used the existing measures which were developedforsubjects with otherpathologies, such as Barhtel Index, Frenchay Activities Index, FIM, PULSES profile. Others have developed new specific measures. Many divide subjects after lower limb amputation into three to eight different funcfional categories in accordance with mobility disabilities. Others have developed measures which specify mobility, such as Amputee Activity Score, Locomotor Capabilities Index (LCl), Functional Measure for Amputees (FMA) developed by the Scottish PhysiotherapyAmputee Research Group (SPARG). Burger tried to assess functional capacities of subjects after lower limb amputation, and others give more importance to the prosthesis and prosthetic services (Prosthetic Profile of the Amputee, Satisfaction with the prosthesis, Prosthesis Evaluation Questionnaire - PEQ, Prosthesis Evaluation Questionnaire and CIR/RERC Prosthetics Users' Survey). To assess participation - handicap after lower limb amputation, the most widely used are SF 36, Reintegration into normal living, Sickness Impact Profile and Nottingham Health Profile. Some have developed specific questionnaires.
