Abstract     Amputation is defined as removal or absence of (a part of) a limb. It can be congenital or traumatic. Amputation is not a failure of other methods of treatment but adequate surgical therapy provided that strict indications are followed. Indications for amputation of an upper limb are relatively rare and difficult because there are no prostheses available at the moment that would provide multiple complex mechanic functions of the upper limb and at the same time all modalities of sensibility. The decision in favor of amputation usually has to be taken in the first 24 hours following an injury. This decision is final and cannot be changed. The decision can be postponed by temporary heterotopic implantation. The best method of treatment of traumatic amputations of the upper limb is replantation which can return both function and sensibility and prevent some unwanted consequences of amputation (amputation neuromas). The article deals with classification, aims and complications ofamputation as well as with indications for different levels of amputation of the upper limb.
