Abstract     It can be said of young people in general that they are very good participants in sports. This also applies to physically disabled children and youth. Adults are looking for their chance in sports as well. Years of experience have shown that sitting volleyball, as a classic representative of team-sports events, best suits persons after amputation. It can fulfill various ambitions at different levels, from rehabilitation and recreation to top sports participation. This article discusses current developments and trends in adapted physical activities, especially in volleyball for the disabled and its most popular event, sitting volleyball, an attractive and relatively easy-to-learn game. Sitting volleyball seems to be designed specifically for participants after amputation. During the last fifteen years, the social perception of disability has been changing. We are witnessing a gradual shift in focus from the disabled person's limitation to the potential for maximizing his or her individual abilities. The concept of adapted physical activity refers to the theory and practice of adapting physical activities to the specific needs of disabled persons. Adapted physical activity means movement. It is a comprehensive term for physical activities and sports in which the interests and capabilities of individuals with limiting abili ties have been taken into special consideration. According to J.C. de Potter, 1994, "adapted physical activity" is an interdisciplinary field that includes education, rehabilitation, and sports sciences for the benefit not just of persons labeled as handicapped but also for anyone in need of pedagogic, therapeutic, or technical adaptations.
