Abstract     In the year 1953 in Slovenia, in the same time as in the other parts of Yugoslavia, the iodine prophylaxis with 10 mg og KI per kg of salt was introduced. In spite of that in the last 15 years more epidemiological studies confirm the existence of mild iodine deficiency disorders on the whole territory of Republic of Slovenia. Data confirming this statement are: 79% of 13 years old schoolchildren have goitre, among them 11% goitre of II degree, the average concentration of iodine in urine is below 100 micro g/l and the average concentration of iodine in mother milk is 4,32 micro g/dl. Because the production of salt in Slovenia is insufficient for all needs, salt with higher iodine content was imported from Bosnia, Croatia, Austria and Slovakia. In January 1999 also for the Slovenia salt production the implementation of higher iodine content in salt (25 mg of KI or 32 mg of KIO3) was recommended. For last 2 years no new data about iodine excretion in urine are available, but the increased incidence of Graves disease and Plummers disease were observed as in other regions after the introduction or elevation of iodine prophylaxis. The new epidemiological study is planned for year 2001.
