Abstract     As elsewhere in Europe also in Slovenia Lyme disease or borreliosis is the most frequent tick-borne disease. It is caused by Borrelia burgdorferi ( B. b. ) which finds the most substantial animal pool in small rodents, particulary mice and the species living in forests. The disease is transmited by ticks Ixodes ricinus; the ecosystem of the central and northern part of Slovenia offers ideal conditions for their survival. From May 1990 to September 1991 we examined 674 ticks collected from eight different geographical areas, using the indirect immunofluorescence test. The proportion of B. b.-infected ticks was found to be 8,5%, a majority were mature (16,1%) as compared to nymphs (5,5%). There were also marked differences in the incidence of infection between individual geographical areas, ranging between the extreme rates of 3,4% and 12,2%. The great difference that has been established in the proportion of B.f. Infected Ixodes ricinus ticks from urban (11 ,0%) vs. those from rural (4,5%) areas appears to be of particular importance. The difference is statistically significant (p = 0,002), and could be attributed to a greater density of certain types of birds and particulary rodents, which are the main hosts to ticks, in the urban areas.
