Abstract     The article deals with the special circumstance of immersion and submersion. The difference is in the primary problem, immersed victims have their head above water and problems are due primarily to hypothermia and cardiac disease. Whereas submerged victims (head below water) have primary asphyxia and hypoxia and cardiac arrest is secondary. In the delivery of basic (BLS) and advanced (ALS) life support there is no difference. There is no difference either as to whether the drowning occured in salt or fresh water. We do have to consider hypothermia and the fact taht we may take up to 1 minute to assess vital signs. We also have to consider rewarming and late respiratory problems.
