Abstract | Acute invasive disease due to Neisseria meningitidis causes substantial mortality. The disease incidence in Slovenia is less than 1 case/100 000 per year. In more than 95% of cases the disease occurs sporadically, although smaller epidemics have been reported. Meningitis is the most frequent clinical presentation, it occurs in 30-50% of cases, followed by 40% of cases presenting with a combination of bacteremia and meningitis, and 10% of bacteremia/sepsis cases. The onset of disease is abrupt with high fever accompanied by a rash in 80% of cases. The rash is maculopapular at the onset but soon becomes petechial. When meningococcal disease is suspected the patient needs urgent transfer to the hospital. Early recognition, aggressive resuscitation, specialist advice and transfer to intensive care unit can reduce mortality in most severely ill patients. | |
