Abstract     Supraventricular tachyarrhythmias are the most common rhythm disturbances present in the internistic emergency department. Because of the paroxysms of atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter and paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardias we have treated 20% of all hospitalized patients in 24hour hospital of internistic emergency department in University Medical Centre Ljubljana. Supraventricular tachyarrhythmia is a consequence of a heart disease and is its sign or symptom. Sometimes arrhythmia can in itself be basic disease, while as it can appear in otherwise healthy heart. Patients with paroxysmal form of arrhythmia have rhythm disturbances in forms of attacks. Symptoms of supraventricular tachyarrhythmias depend on stage of arrhythmia and on basic heart disease. Electrocardiogram is the main method for recognition of arrhythmias. Treatment of arrhythmias depends on the type and duration of arrhythmia, hemodynamic stability of the patient, on basic heart disease and other accompanying diseases. Arrhythmias can be treated with drugs, electrical cardioversion or with combination of both. Equipment and organization of clinical work in 24-hour hospital enables treatment of more than 95% of all patients with supraventricular tachyarrhythmias, who have been admitted to the internistic emergency department. Opening of the 24-hour hospital of internistic emergency department in University Medical Centre Ljubljana decreased the need for hospital admission and hospital treatment of patients with supraventricular tachyarrhitmias.
