Abstract		Sepsis and septic shock are consequences of severe systemic inflammatory response syndrome triggered by infection. Mortality of sepsis and septic shock remains high in spite of modern treatment. Clinical picture of sepsis and septic shock reflects the interplay of the damaged organ systems. The diagnosis of sepsis and septic shock is clinical, laboratory is needed for establishing the etiology and the severity of the organ damage. Treatment of sepsis and septic shock is causative and supportive. Recently, new therapeutic options targeting the pathogenesis of sepsis have been introduced. The whole medical team including physicians and nurses should be involved in diagnosis and treatment of sepsis.
