Abstract		In the article infections of the central nervous system are described, especially the purulent meningitis, tick-borne meningoencephalitis and borrelial meningitis. These infections are caused by different pathogens; the mortality and partial invalidity as a consequence of central nervous system infections in Slovenia are still considerable. A rapid diagnosis and treatment for prevention of disease sequelae is important, as well as control of vital functions and level of consciousness. Clinical manifestations of meningitis in children and adults are presented. Nursing care of children and adults is described separately, as well as problems which can arise in planning and performing nursing care.
