Abstract     The intention of this graduation thesis was fmd out about smoking habits among conscripts. For this research I used a questionnaire which contained 17 questions. 202 conscripts from barracks 26. Oktober in Vrhnika participated in this research. The questionnaire was performed in November and December 2001. It was found that 52% of the conscripts questionned were smokers, 44% were non-smokers and 4% were occasional smokers. The average age of the conscripts was 21 years. 53% of the smokers smoked 10-19 cigarettes per day, 28% smoked 1-9 cigarettes per day and 19% 20 or more cigarettes per day. 52% of smokers tried, unsuccessfully, to stop smoking at least once. The average age of the smokers when they smoked their first cigarette was 14,25 years and 17,12 years when they started to smoke regularly; the difference in age was almost 3 years. The most frequent reason to start smoking was the fact that most of their friends were smokers too. All of the conscripts were very well informed about the noxiousness of smoking cigarettes and slighty less well informed about the risk of passive smoking and "light" cigarettes. Non-smokers were more educated than smokers. Only 33% of the participating conscripts have not been exposure to cigarette smoke in places where thay live and work.
