Abstract     Epidemiological studies show a high prevalence of periodontal disease worldwide. Root scaling and planing is the basic treatment. Its aim is to remove bacterial plaque and calculus from the infected roots, but the procedure is not always completely effective. Local drug delivery can be used as an adjunct to root scaling and planing to improve the healing of periodontal tissues. A variety of vehicles, like hollow fibres, biodegradable gels, ointments, gelatine matrix, polymers and microspheres, are used to deliver different antibiotics and chlorhexidine into periodontal pockets. The paper presents a review of studies in this field, showing that the various methods of local drug delivery can be effective. The treatment may benefit patients with refractory sites found after initial periodontal therapy.
