Abstract     Recent studies have demonstrated an association between inflammatory periodontal disease and various systemic conditions involving the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, the liver, the kidney and other organs. Periodontal disease is the most common chronic infection in dogs. According to some authors, it affects more than 90% of animals over three years of age. The results of the present study suggest that, besides influencing the survival of teeth, periodontal disease has an impact on the development of various systemic diseases responsible for major morbidity and mortality in dogs. Consequently, appropriate diagnostic evaluation and treatment od periodontal disease not only contribute to the longevity of the dentition but may also decrease the prevalence and complications of some important systemic diseases.
