Abstract | Non-invasive measuring method involving displacement measurements of skeletal muscle belly displacement (tensiomiography - TMG) has been developed at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Ljubljana. It enables measurements of skeletal muscle responses to voluntary or electrically evoked contractions close to measured muscle that enables measurements of contractile and biomechanical properties of a single muscle. Due to practical value of the TMG measurement a mathematical model has been made to study principles of measured muscles' contraction. The presented model of muscle response is based on physiology of muscle cell, on transport and binding of calcium ions inside the muscle cell and contraction process of a single muscle fiber. Model has been made using package SIMULINK of program tool MATLAB. The parameters' identification has been performed with adaptive model and genetic algorithms as optimization method. In the model the properties of slow or fast muscle fibers were discussed separately. One of the parameters of the model is highly correlated with slow muscle fiber portion analyzed histochemically. Response of the model fit very well to the measured response for different muscles. Modeled concentration of calcium ions inside slow or fast muscle fiber agree with measured values found in literature. Model is used for comparison of responses and processes inside muscle fibers between different skeletal muscles. | |
