Abstract     Ivy is little known as a medical plant, it has also not been used in folk medicine very often. Some old reports on using ivy in medical treatment state that it was used internally for intestinal diseases, above all with bile stones, and externally for inflammations, burns and rheumatism. Until recently, researchers did not pay it much attention. Due to the high contents of saponins, it was recently tested for use in pharmacy. Saponins have been known for a long time as active agents, for example those from primrose, soapwort or wild chestnut. In modern phytotherapy, ivy is used for its expectorative and spasmolytic effects, and primarily for treating obstructive diseases of the respiratory organs.
