Abstract | | Autumn crocus (meadow saffron; Colchicum autumnale) is used in medicine especallyfor its colchicine. The drug and extracts were once used for treating gout, rheumatism, oedema, enlarged prostate and gonorrhoea. With extracts, they also tried to treat various types of cancer. Today, the drug is used as a primary source of colchicine, in some places used in treating gout attacks. Colchicine is very poisonous, therefore autumn crocus is also classified as one of the most poisonous Slovenian plants.
