Abstract		Hawthorn (Crataegus sp.) is used for treating minor heart ailments, and is one of the few medical herbs on which many clinical studies have been conducted. These studies have differed according to the type and number of patients included, the type and dosage of medical preparations, the measurements used to identify the medical effect, and their duration, Double-blind placebo-controlled studies have shown that treatments using hawthorn are significantly more successful than placebo-based treatments. Therefore, the therapeutic usefulness of hawthorn can also be discussed on a scientific basis.
