Abstract		The article examines-garlic as a medical plant, i.e. its role in phytotherapy. Garlic has been valued in folk medicine for a long time due to its anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti parasite effects. Studies conducted in the last decade in vitro, animal, clinical and epidemiological studies - confirm the findings of folk medicine and have discovered other effects. Most studies of recent years were connected to its effects on the cardio-vascular system. Possibilities of antitumour effects have also been suggested. However, garlic certainly also has some unwanted side effects.
