Abstract     Based on data that the pollution of the aquatic environment because of unproper and unsuficient waste water treatment, uncontrolled outflows of waste waters and that none of the 53 registered and 60 000 illegal landfill site in Slovenia is properly structured, waste water impact is deemed to be one of the most serious pollution problems. Within the EUREKA project three types of constructed wetlands (CW) were installed or optimised to treat the landfill leachate. The systems were designed to particular climate conditions, hydraulic and organic loading. Hydraulic measurements with the usage of different media were followed on a small scale model of CW. Performance efficiency of CW systems were evaluated through physical, chemical and microbiological parameters, productivity of plants, and through heavy metals, nitrogen, and phosphorus uptake by reeds. Results proved that CW offers a wide spectrum of natural processes that serve to reduce waste water contaminants efficiently. Therefore, the performance of those three systems strongly support the use of CW as efficient, low-cost alternatives for waste water treatment from settlements up to 1000 PE, turistic centers (hotels, camps, turistic farms), smaller dislocated industrial firms and for landfill leachate treatment (especially from old landfill sites) in Slovenia and other simillar structured lands.
