Abstract     Background: Heroin addiction represents an important social problem, which implies medical, social, economical, legal and other consequences. Therefore it is necessary to choose the effective instrument to monitor addiction, which at the same time also permits us to evaluate sociodemographic and other characteristics of heroin addicted persons. Methods: In a cross-sectional pilot study we interviewed with AbSo-questionnaire 35 randomly chosen heroin addicts, who sought medical help in Centre for Prevention and Treatment of Illegal Drug Dependence in Koper. The data were analyzed by Stata computer program. Results: We studied social situation and other demographic data of heroin addicts, abuse of psychoactive substances (PAS), therapy and health consequences caused by addiction. Addiction is above all the problem of adolescents. Heroin addicts are population which lives in problematic social situation: they have difficulties with education or employment, problems with living situation, problematic relationship with partner and parents and involvements in penal proceedings. Addiction is at the same time also the consequence of problematic social relations and relationship in family. Conclusions: Heroin addicted persons have problematic social situation. The data obtained by AbSo-questionnaire can be useful in planning and evaluating more effective and acceptable programs and social measures with the purpose to solve the problem of addiction.
