Abstract     The present paper represents the first extensive cross-sectional epidemiological study of the prevalence of sexually transmitted Chlamydia trachomatis infection in young men in Slovenia. To estimate the incidence of such infections in the target population, urine samples were being collected over the period from 1999 to 2001 from recruits, who 1 month prior to entering military service underwent the obligatory vaccination against tick-borne meningoencephalitis at the Institute of Public Health Celje. From a total of 1272 subjects included, who had in the previous 2 weeks received no antibiotics and had reported no urinating problems, a first-void urine sample was collected. The 1272 urine samples obtained were tested for asymptomatic infection by the method of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Infection with sexually transmitted C. trachomatis was detected in 2.6% of subjects without any symptoms of urethritis reported (33/1272). Of the subjects identified positive, 76% decided to undergo treatment yet none of them revealed his female partner. For treatment of both the infected males and their female partners a single dose of 1 g SumamedR (2 packets) was prescribed. By means of a questionnaire the information on sexual behaviour of the included participants was obtained. The average age of young men was 19.9. At the time of their first sexual experience their average age was 16.6, whereas the age of their female partners was 17.1. At that time the majority of adolescent males were using condoms (86%), most of them still continue to use condoms (76.6%), 40% using them regularly. The average age of infected recruits was 19.8. They started being sexually active earlier than the non-infected subjects, at the time of their first sexual experience their average age was 16.2, whereas the age of their female partners was 16.9.
