Abstract     From 1996 to 2001 the Clinical Departement of Otolaryngology and Cervicofacial Surgery in Ljubljana had 54 deaf patients, of which 44 were children and 10 were adults, without speech perceptionbenefit with hearing aids. Consequently, they have all been provided with cochlear implant system. In some of the cases, we encountered a severe mid-operative haemorrhage of a mastoid emissary veins. In these cases, the bleeding was controlled and in no cases the operation had to be abandoned. In further observations, the transient facial palsy has been observed in only two (3,7%) patients postoperatively. Only three children (5,5%) required re-implantation: one child had an incorrect electrode positioning and two other children had a device failure due to direct trauma to the ceramic package of the receiver. In two of these three children, device failure reoccurred and we had to replace it. In one particular case, a foreign body granuloma set onto the fixed tie of the receiver area above the implant. The nylon suture that fixates the receiver onto the temporal bone had to be removed. In another case eight months after the implantation, an onset of acute purulent mastoiditis occurred, and the mastoid was consequently treated with additional operative and antibiotic treatments. In both of these cases, the cochlear implant functioned normally following the fore mentioned operative interventions. During the five years execution of the cochlear program we encountered very few complications and all were dealt with in an easy manner. Thus, we conclude and reiterate that this method of rehabilitation is deemed safe and effective.
