Abstract     Objective: Cochlear implantation represents important advance in managing profound deafness but it is still not easy to predict the final effect. The aim of this study was to evaluate the cochlear implant program in Slovenija, a country with 2 millions inhabitants. Subjects and methods: In a five year period 54 persons with profound hearing loss underwent cochlear implantation. All of them received multi-channel devices. Follow-up period ranged from 6 months to 5 years. Case history, etiology of deafness, sort of hearing loss and benefits of cochlear implantation were evaluated. Results: The commonest etiology of deafness in our patients was hereditary hearing loss. Most of them were deaf less than five years. The reimplantation was required in three patients. The benefits of cochlear implantation vary between the individuals but all of them use the device several hours every day. Conclusion: Cochlear implantation has been established as a safe and effective method of rehabilitation of adults or children with hearing loss, who derive insufficient benefit from amplification. The benefits of cochlear implantation can be seen in better communication capabilities, reduced isolation and improved confidence of patients.
