Abstract     Purpose. The aim of the study was to establish whether and how non-verbal intellectual functioning in deaf children is affected by the implantation of cochlear implant (CI). Subjects and methods. 15 children, aged 2-8 years at the time of the implantation of CI (modal age 3 years) were examined before and 2-4 years after it. At both occasions their non-verbal intellectual functioning was tested by The Leiter International Performance Scale (LIPS) which was specifically designed to examine non-verbal intellectual functioning independently of verbal factor. Results. Since the number of subjects was low, no statistical analysis was made. Gathered data show that all the children progressed. 7 of them achieved importantly higher quotients between mental and chronological age a few years after the implantation compared to those achieved before it. The greatest augmentation was found in a boy who was 6 years old at the time of implantation and has used CI for 3 years. Conclusion. All the examined children with CI progressed in their non-verbal intellectual functioning. Approximately half of them accelerated. We cannot say that it is only due to gaining hearing, but also other components of specific rehabilitation and therapeutic programmes.
