Abstract     The success of cochlear implantation is determined by the ability of acquiring speech communication. We verified the success in a group of children at the Centre for Hearing and Speech Maribor, who were implanted after their age of 6. The results of our analysis confirm those in other countries. Apart from the duration of deafness speech development also depends on the level of speech communication before the surgery, while the progress can primarily be expected in improving the understanding of and communication in known, closed-set sentences. Moreover, big differences are confirmed between individual children. Subjective assessments of children and their families are positive.
