Abstract     In a large group (app. 200) of hop accessions susceptibility for downy mildew (Pseudoperonospora humuli Miyabe et Takah) and aphids (Phorodon humuli Schrank) has been estimated, and additionally their essential oil has been analysed by gas chromatography. Results have been processed to find biochemical markers for downy mildew and/or aphid resistance, which would be of use in the hop breeding process. Studies of downy mildew susceptibility gave nine possible markers: alphahumulene, iso-amyl-iso-butyrate, methyl-decanoate, methyl-deca-4-enoate, trans-ocimene, ger*niol and unidentified peaks 33, 51 and 68. They act as individual markers. Studies of aphid susceptibility gave three possible markers: alpha-pinene, beta-pinene and an unidentified peak 92. They act in combination.
