Abstract     A representative epidemiological study was performed in 1999, based on a pattern of 296 students attending third classes of the Ljubljana secondary schools. The pattern of students was proportional according to sex. Students were on average 18 years old. Based on an opinion pool, the nutritional habits of secondary school students, some of their other habits, bad habits, characteristics and knowledge on healthy foods was evaluated. The quality of daily meals was evaluated with the method of yesterday meals. Our research work showed that on the average students consume three meals per day. Approximately a half of them does not consume milk and dairy products, fruits and vegetable on a daily basis. Meat is consumed daily by a third of students, while 3.5% of students does not eat meat. While in school, students are very often thirsty. Every day of the week, two thirds of students regularly eat at least one warm meal per day. One half of students consumes fast food as their main meal several times per week. Only one fourth of students has breakfast every morning. A half of students does not consume their meals at the same hour every day and only one tenth of them eats all three meals regularly every day. Nutrition of girls is poorer, if compared with boys, as they eat characteristically less milk and dairy products, fish, eggs and meat, less warm meals, they less frequently eat snacks late in the morning and less regularly consume all three daily meals. At the same time they are less satisfied with their body weight (three fifths wishes to be slimmer) and are less frequently active in sports. Fruits and vegetables are least consumed by students of vocational schools. Their nutritional habits are most irregular, the quality of their meals received the lowest evaluation according to the method of yesterday meals, and their knowledge on healthy nutrition is poor. Their physical activity is at the lowest level. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters).
