Abstract     This work is just one step on the way that many have taken before me and, I hope, many will after me. I am much obliged to all who were walking with me. I would like to thank my mentor, prof. dr. Tomaž Slivnik, for giving me the opportunity to take this road and to my co-mentor, doc. dr. Aneta Stefanovska for showing me the way. She did not only gave me the general directions, but also paved the road before me, helped me to find my coordinates when I was lost and pushed me around the corner if necessary. Along this bumpy road, Uroš was my most faithful traveling companion. Without his help, this thesis would neither look nor be the same. I shall always be grateful to him for numerous discussions, criticisms of the text and his efforts to put the thesis into the present form. He also solved many quarrels between me and my computer. To may co-workers in the Group of Nonlinear Dynamics and Synergetic, Marko Čenčur, Robi Mavri and Mario Hožič I am grateful for technical assistance during the measurements a.nd signal analysis. The experimental studies were made possible by many volunteers who let us record the voices of their cardiovascular system. We thank each of them for their time and good will. Dr. Dušan Štajer and Vilma Urbančič-Rovan from the University Medical Center in Ljubljana selected the patients and provided for clinical support during recordings on patients after myocardial infarction and diabetic partients.
