Abstract     Most plants have a characteristic odour, caused by volatile compounds. These can be isolated by steam distillation and appear as oily liquid called essential oil. Since hops are used in brewing to add bitterness and aroma to beer, the composition of its essential oil is an important criterion in hop quality evaluation. Typically the essential oil prepared by steam distillation is analysed by gas chromatography. Such a method was optimized as a part of research project "Model for quantitative evaluation of secondary metabolites of hops". Optimal amount of hop sample, optimal dilution of essential oil and optimal chromatographic parameters were determined. Simultaneously, the repeatability of the method and the acceptable storage time of the essential oil were also determined.
Summary     Večina rastlin ima značilen vonj, ki ga povzročajo hlapne snovi. Te lahko izoliramo s pomočjo destilacije z vodno paro in pri tem dobimo oljnato tekočino imenovano eterično olje. Glede na to, da hmelj prispeva k aromi piva, je sestava eteričnega olja pomemben kriterij za ocenjevanje kakovosti hmelja. Sestavo eteričnega olja hmelja določamo s pomočjo destilacije z vodno paro in s plinsko-kromatografsko analizo pripravljenega eteričnega olja. V okviru raziskovalnega projekta "Model za kvantitativno evaluacijo sekundarnih metabolitov hmelja" smo metodo izolacije in analize eteričnega olja optimizirali. Določili smo optimalno količino vzorca hmelja pri destilaciji, optimalno razredčitev eteričnega olja za plinskokromatografsko analizo in izbrali najprimernejše kromatografske pogoje. Določili smo tudi ponovljivost preskusne metode in čas, ki lahko mine med pripravo eteričnega olja in njegovo analizo.
