Abstract     Poverty can also be associated with an increased risk of obesity. For groups with inadequate resources, food choice is limited to the need of finding inexpensive energy sources. Vegetables and fruit provide relatively little energy, and so vulnerable poor families ma y buy cheap calories in high fat products such as sausages, meats, pies and fats, sugars and canned food in order to fulfil their basic needs. These foods are of high energy density but are generally not rich enough in micro-nutrients, compared to vegetables and fruits which are in contrast, rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
Summary     Revščina je lahko tudi povezana s povečanim tveganjem za nastanek debelosti. Pri ljudeh z nezadostnimi dohodki je izbira hrane omejena na potrebo po zagotovitvi cenenih virov energije. Sadje in zelenjava dajeta sorazmerno malo energije, zato revne družine kupujejo cenene kalorije iz živil z visoko vsebnostjo maščob, kot so klobase, mastno pecivo, maščobe, sladkor in konzerve z namenom, da zadostijo svojim osnovnim potrebam. Ta hrana je energijsko gosta, a ima malo mikrohranil v primerjavi z zelenjavo in sadjem, ki nasprotno vsebujeta veliko vitaminov, mineralov in antioksidantov.
