Abstract     Intramedullary nailing is a brainchild of Gerhardt Kuentscher and his co-workers in the first half of 20th century. They developed technical and clinical basis for a broad use of the method. After great enthusiasm at the beginning disappointment emerged which considerably limited its use. Emerging of new designs of intramedullary nails and locking in the second half of 20th century brought method new popularity and considerably increased its use. Contemporary intramedullary nailing represents quick, secure, biologic and minimally invasive way for the treatment of long bones fractures.
