Abstract     The variability of fibre type distribution in limb muscles was examined with histochemical and tensiomyographic methods in two groups of 15 men aged between 17 and 40 years. Nine muscles were chosea: biceps brachii (BB), triceps brachii (TB), brachioradialis (BR), flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS), extensor digitorum (ED), biceps femoris (BF), tibialis anterior (TA), gastrocnemius - caput mediale (GCM) and soleus (SOL). The distribution of different fibre types varied within the muscles, as function of depth, with a predominance of type 26 flbres at the surface and type 1 fibres in deeper regions of the muscle. Type 2a fibres were equally distributed in the whole muscle cross-section. For all the analysed muscles the contraction times of muscle belly response to twitch stimulation were significantly (p<5%) shorter than the contraction times measured at 50% of supramaximal response.
