Abstract     The present paper outlines the Irish response to the worsening problem of suicidal behaviour. The background to the problem, one of the fastest rising suicide rates in the world, is reported on in terms of age, gender and method. Although ad hoc in certain respects, the response mirrors many of the suggestions made by the United Nations regarding national suicide prevention projects. From the National Task Force that provided an initial draft for a prevention strategy to a co-ordinating body to develop such a strategy (National Suicide Review Group), developments in prevention are described. The overall development of suicide prevention in Ireland, including details of specific interventions, may be of interest to other nations beginning to explore the development of suicide prevention.
