Abstract     This paper reports on two studies that examined the interaction of psychological risk factors in samples of parasuicides and matched hospital controls. Study one found that parasuicides (n=20) differed from hospital controls (n=20) on measures of depression, hopelessness and negative cognitive style in the predicted direction. Future positive thinking, depression and negative cognitive style contributed independently to the hopelessness variance. The future positive thinking effect was partially replicated. Study two examined the relationship between hopelessness, perfectionistic tendencies and future thinking in parasuicides (n=22) and hospital controls (=22). Parasuicides exhibited significantly more socially-prescribed perfectionistic tendencies than the controls. The results are discussed in terms of the relationship between treatment intervention and cognitive vulnerability.
