Abstract | In spite of the fairly non-systematic research of the fauna of lower crustacearis, 37 species or one third of all registered species of the taxa Copepoda in Cladocera in Slovenia have been registered at Lake Cerknica. Such relatively rich species composition characterises, however, smaller, shallower water bodies. Nevertheless, some species characteristic of larger, permanent lakes are also present, i.e. species of the genus Daphnia, Diaphanosoma, Thermocyclops, Arctodiaptomus, Eudiaptomus. So far, no representative of the genus Cyclops, the most distinctive planktonic genus in large lakes, has been found. The most abundant are the so-called seasonal species, which apper mainly in the warmer part of the year. As far as frigophilous species are concerned, only Acanthocyclops vernalis is present.Lake Cerknica is truly outstanding for its endemites, rare species and the species appearing on the extreme edge of their distribution. In some cases, the species could belong to two or even all three categories. Such species composition makes Lake Cerknica of course even more valuable. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters) | |
