Abstract		Insomnia is a frequent problem, but not the main reason for visiting the office of a general practician. This is the reason for this illness and symptom of illness respectfully to be undervalued, the patient is usually rapidly sent away with a prescription for hypnotics. However, long-term use of hypnotics causes physical and mental dependence. This method of treatment is especially dangerous for older people, as it may cause a lifelong addiction to hypnotics. The author tries to explain the problem of prescribing hypnotics and the unsuitable approach of general practicians to treatment of this disorder. The research confirmed that there is a high percentage of patients, older then 65 years, that are addicted to hypnotics, as well as that the doctors are not advising patients in a sufficient manner about the side effects of pills.
