Abstract     In the first part, the thesis focuses on nursing education in Slovenia. It provides a review of the image of the nursing profession and research work of nurses. In this connection, the Journal of the Slovenian Nursing Association (JSNA) is presented. The central part of the thesis is the bibliometric and content analysis of the JSNA. The research comprises all the papers in the Articles section published between 1976 and 2001. During these years, the authors of 843 articles wrote 5,540 pages, with the average of 6.5 pages per article. The analysis confirmed that nursing care is a female profession - 68 % of the articles published were written by women. While MDs are the most frequent among male authors, nurses with Associated Degree prevail among female authors. Sixteen percent of A.D. nurses have a further Bachelor level degree and 28 of those have a postgraduate degree. Two nurses even hold a PhD. Forty-seven percent of all the articles are authored or co-authored by at least one nurse. The majority of authors come from Ljubljana. Technical articles prevail. Among research articles, 31 % were written by nurses with Bachelor level degree (mainly in the recent years), which proves that improved and extended education highly influenced publications written by nurses.
